Around 1 in 8 men in England experiences a mental health condition and 3 times as many men as women die by suicide. Societally and culturally, we have made it harder for men to ask for help when they are struggling which, ultimately, can result in loss of life.
Research suggests that men who can’t speak openly about their emotions are less able to recognise symptoms of poor mental health in themselves and are less likely to reach out for support. And so, we must, urgently, break down the stigma around mental illness and normalise the idea that men can show emotional vulnerability.
